The IAM Legend Learning Game

A highly interactive e-learning game designed to introduce and engage learners with Identity and Access Management. This means, at a high-level; understanding the issues, risks and challenges that businesses are facing when managing and maintaining the growing number of user identities.

The learner has now to overcome five challenges, dealing with different IAM related requests in order to manage access, to keep sensitive information safe and to become the IAM Legend. The learner needs to successfully pass each challenge to unlock the next one and gain more IAM experience points.

Content Design

Understanding the content made me feel that the best way to bring the content to life was with mini scenarios. These scenarios would focus on situations that everyone is familiar with but wouldn’t necessarily know fall under the ‘IAM umbrella’. I created 5-7 scenarios that linked back to each of the main learning objectives.

Why Game?

The main business goal which was to engage and this was the key for me to wrap the above into a gamified experience. I used the IAM Legend character, the time constrains, the rewards and the challenges in order to excite the learners but also to create a safe environment for participants to experience the pressured decision making process involved when dealing with IAM requests.

Development

I created all the characters and illustrations using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. For the development I used Articulate Storyline 2. In order for all the game mechanisms to work I had to create more than 40 variables and almost 1000 triggers! Layers, states and clever use of transitions and animations were key to create a smooth and seamless user experience.

IAM Legend is fully a gamified learning experience I designed to turn a complex training journey into an engaging, story-driven adventure. By crafting the narrative, game mechanics, and user flow, I transformed essential learning content into interactive challenges that motivate learners to explore, practise, and progress with confidence.

The project’s strong engagement results and innovative design approach led to it being shortlisted for the Learning Technologies Awards in the category of Best Gamification Learning Project of the Year (2017)—a recognition that highlights the creativity, effectiveness, and impact of my work in learning experience design.
